Bad For You – Essay Example

A question of whether businesses that offer legal but bad for health products should be held liable for the effects is rather controversial because it can be analyzed from two different points of view. Firstly, each individual has a freedom to choose and nobody can make one buy some specific product since antimonopoly laws always provide the society with a number of opportunities to choose from. However, on the other hand, government has already influenced some of these potential decisions by introducing, for example, regulations prohibiting smoking in public places (thus reducing people’s right to choose whether to endanger health by smoking) or prohibiting selling or using drugs (thus again prohibiting people’s right to endanger own health). From this perspective bad products can also be viewed as a subject to elimination form the market as being dangerous for the health of the nation.
But, returning to the first perspective, it can be said that many of the things that are bad for health are very popular among people (as it was, for example, with smoking in some period of time). Individuals often choose to buy what they like and enjoy, instead of what is good for them. Therefore, in my opinion, such a behavior is just each person’s choice, and, consequently, the company manufacturing the product cannot carry any responsibility for how, why, and with what results the person uses the product. The only thing I’d say a company should be responsible for is providing a potential client with all (!) the information regarding the product – both positive and negative. Moreover, this exact responsibility I would be happy to see supported by legislation in order for the citizens to be aware of what their choice may lead to. Such a solution, I believe, would both ensure people are aware of all the dangers of a specific product, free businesses form being responsible for people’s levity, and provide people with adequate criterion to base the choice upon.
