Conflict of Interest – Essay Example

The paper "Conflict of Interest" is a delightful example of an essay on social science. a. In his 2009 New Yorker article about healthcare, Gawande reports the views of many stakeholders in medicine and the U.S. healthcare system. What does Gawande mean when he says that “we are witnessing a battle of the soul of American medicine”?  Gawande, basically, is stating in his article that the issue before American doctors today is whether they want to maximize their revenue from a patient as much as they can, or to ensure that the patient’s needs are first met. He states that the doctors need to ask themselves if they care more about making a profit or about taking care of a patient and making sure that the patient gets high quality and adequate care. b. What role do you personally have in that battle? Being a future doctor, the personal role I have in this battle is to ensure that, when I enter the profession, the patients I treat receive adequate care, without me ending up looking at them as mere cash cows to be milked as much as possible. Keeping in mind that I would be benefiting economically from my patients as well, I would ensure that this does not become my primary concern; I would definitely want to keep the Hippocratic Oath of first doing no harm.
