Balto in Central Park – Essay Example

The paper "Balto in Central Park" is an outstanding example of an essay on English. Central Park was completed by the 1890-1940 era. After its completion, Central Park fell into disrepair during the late 1800s through the 1930s due to neglect. After Fiorello La Guardia was elected mayor in 1934 this all changed. Mayor La Guardia combined all five of the park authorities into one large authority. Due to his efforts, the Park was cleaned up, with new plants replacing the dead ones. Although the Park has had periods of neglect, today it is very important to preserve this refuge from city life. This was the Central Park I went to visit. I went to see the statue Balto. Although I did not watch the animated movie, the 1925 diphtheria antitoxin delivery to Nome was in the required 1890-1940 time frame. The Siberian Husky that completed this was named Balto in honor of Samuel Balto. This amazing dog led a dog team carrying the antitoxin that traveled between Nenana, Alaska to Nome, Alaska. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is annually run in honor of this run. Balto was sculpted by Fredrick Roth. The statue was unveiled in front of the real Balto on December 17, 1925. Balto is located north on the main path heading away from the Tisch Children’s Zoo. He has a black and brown hue. Balto’s ears are perked up in this statue as if still awaiting commands. Placed on a rock, Balto’s hanging tongue and watchful eyes show a loyal dog wanting to serve humans. The inscription on the plaque sums up Balto’s essence: Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the sled dogs that relayed antitoxin six hundred miles over rough ice, across treacherous waters, through Arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the Winter of 1925.
