Gospel of Matthew – Essay Example
The paper "Gospel of Matthew " is an excellent example of an essay on religion and theology. The passage begins with Judas Iscariot offering his services to the chief priest. He volunteers to identify Jesus so he can be apprehended and brought to trial. Jesus observes the Passover with his apostles, where he teaches them concerning the sacrament of bread and wine. He said of the bread, “Take, eat; this is my body” (Matthew 26:26). Of the wine, he said, “Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the new testament” (Matthew 26:26-27). After this, Jesus travels to Gethsemane, where he prays to the Father and agrees to do all he is commanded. He asks the apostles to wait with him, but they fall asleep. He says he is waiting for the one who will betray him. Soon after, Judas arrives and marks Jesus with a kiss. He is taken, but Peter follows discretely behind. As Jesus is tried, Peter denies knowing Jesus three times. He is ashamed, for he has fulfilled the prophecy Jesus had spoken concerning Peter. The next day, Judas tries to repent of betraying Jesus but is denied by the priests. Jesus is taken before Pilate, who can find no harm in Jesus. The crowd cries for Jesus’ blood and so Pilate washes his hands of the situation saying, “ I am innocent of the blood of this just person.” (Matthew 27:24). Jesus is taken and humiliated. The crowd spits on him and makes him wear a crown of thorns. He is taken to Golgotha and crucified along with two thieves. Jesus dies on the cross and is buried in a tomb owned by Joseph of Arimathaea. Watchmen are set to guard the body. Three days later, Mary Magdalene went to visit the tomb. Angels tell her that Jesus had risen and that she should go tell the other disciples. The watchmen are bribed to spread rumors that Jesus was not resurrected, but that his followers stole his body. Jesus appears to many of his followers in a large group. He then travels with his apostles and commands them to teach the world all of the things He had taught them.
