TV vs Movies – Essay Example
The paper "TV vs. Movies" is an excellent example of an essay on media. TV as a medium of entertainment has got bigger and bolder over the years. “The people working in television right now are the Shakespeares of the medium.” (Ira Glass). However, movies go that extra mile in delivering to the viewers an amazing and complete story from start to finish. Made using much larger budgets, better actors, well-etched characters, a good story, the special effects, the picture quality, etc are much better than TV and this results in a spellbinding viewer experience. Compared to watching popular shows on a squared shaped TV, the largest one being around 150 inches, doesn’t do justice to the screening even if the show was actually good and is definitely no match for the stereoscopic images of 3-D movies with the 70 mm presentation prints. IMAX-the high-definition technology based big-screen entertainment is three times the size of the usual 70 mm screen. The Dolby Digital surround sound that movies have are superior in terms of the sound quality compared to the best home theater systems available in the market today. Additionally, it is not a good idea to remain in a cubbyhole by staying at home almost all the time. You need to venture out, leaving the comfort of your home and hop into a movie theater. This kind of indirect social interaction is not only highly essential but also in a way mandatory for any human being belonging to any age group. “In a culture like ours, long accustomed to splitting and dividing all things as a means of control, it is sometimes a bit of a shock to be reminded that, in operational and practical fact, the medium is the message. This is merely to say that the personal and social consequences of any medium - that is, of any extension of ourselves - result from the new scale that is introduced into our affairs by each extension of ourselves, or by any new technology.” (Marshall McLuhan, 7).
