Unprecedented alterations in climate are occurring. The incessant climate transformations on earth will change life on this planet. Today, atmospheric changes are real. The climate has altered evidently, tangibly, and visibly. The escalation of average temperatures is not only possible but also very probable, while human involvement in the natural climate plays a central part. Climate changes are the major concerns in connection to the minerals sector and sustainable growth. It is potentially, one of the greatest of all threats to the surroundings and the quality of life.
The roots of atmospheric alterations are both natural and human. Some of the natural causes entail are volcanic eruptions, which cause the escalation of polluting gases in the air resulting into the escalation of temperatures. Another natural cause is ocean currents. The oceans are the key constituent of the climate system. They play significant part in influencing the atmospheric intensity of carbon dioxide. The oceans experience circulation changes, which affect the climate through the movement of carbon dioxide into and out of the air (Hardy, 2003).
Humans have also caused climate changes through activities like the blazing of fossil fuels. When there is a burning of fossil fuels, there is usually the production of polluting gases into the air resulting in the increase of temperatures. Deforestation is also a known activity, which makes a large contribution in the carbon emanation. This is because; the trees that would reduce the carbon from the atmosphere are no longer there. Therefore, the more there is the cutting of trees, the more the escalation of carbon in the atmosphere, thus causing climate alteration due to the increase in temperatures. Another human cause is the population augmentation. Population growth leads to escalated consumption for food and energy and the increased demand leads to augmented emissions (Hardy, 2003).
Climate modifications have already caused recognizable impacts on the surroundings. The consequences that scientists foresaw earlier would result from climate transformations are currently occurring. Some of the effects are the declining of snow on mountains and the steady substitution of tropical forests savanna, particularly in the eastern Amazonia. Due to this, there is the occurrence of the biodiversity loss through species deaths in the tropical areas. Moreover, people have experienced water scarcity for people use, agriculture, and power production. Many areas have also experienced the augmentations of risks of inland fore frequently, coastal flooding and higher erosion from storms and sea height increase (Hardy, 2003).
The mitigation choices can be explained as technological and policy. Some of the mitigations are the enhancement of power efficiency and the promotion of the use of cleaner power resources and methods. Another approach to mitigation is the advancement of forest management. Also by upgrading farm animals’ waste management, changed use, and a making-of fertilizers, and other alterations to agricultural land use can lessen the occurrence of atmospheric transformations (Hardy, 2003).
The threat to alterations in climate is growing and owing to that kind of problems, national actions through local and worldwide methods are necessary. Nevertheless, the carrying out of these actions must in a sustainable and reasonable development structure (Hardy, 2003).
Before the attendance of my current school, I worked for several organizations as a volunteer with an environmental focus. As doing undergraduate, I have worked with the U.S “Environmental protection Agency” intern program. Last Summer I was interning with Seattle Public Utilities. My focus has been on wellbeing and social policy. I am presently an undergraduate.
