The paper "Socialization and TV" is a perfect example of a sociology research paper. Television in today’s world has become a dominant force in most of the children’s lives. It plays a vital role in socialization, especially children. According to Lindholm, (1997), nearly 99% of the US homes have a television. Moreover, nearly 50% of the children have a television in their room. Santrock, (1993), is of the opinion that children between the ages of 2-5 years spend around 28 hours a week in front of the T.V and children between 6-11 years spend 23 hours a week. The amount of time spent in front of a television has changed the role of television from being a medium of entertainment to a role played in socialization. Television has long portrayed the roles of the genders which have resulted in who we are. Critics often argue that television has an adverse effect on children due to the portrayal of violent and sexual themes. In this respect it can be argued that there are many good children shows like Sesame Street, Barney, Roseanne and Clarissa that serves as a motivator to the viewers (children) watching them. These programs portray children in positive roles and activities which can serve as good learning lessons (Buscema, 1997, para. 7-9). Keeping in view the role of television in today’s world, it is evident that it will have an influential effect on most of the children and shape their behavior. Having said that it is also our responsibility to control the amount and contents of the television programs and at the same time keep vigilance on the perspective from which they watch the shows. It is important that there is a conscious effort from the parents, teachers and the media to have control over what children are watching and how they get affected. From the parents’ and teachers’ point of view they should make sure that they monitor their children’s activities and habits regarding television shows, at the same time raise their voice for telecasting good programs. On the other hand, the media should be more responsible in making sure that they pay less importance to their profits and more towards imparting good social morals (Buscema, 1997, para. 7-9).
