Prefect Application Why do you want to be a prefect (dorm parent helper)? A prefect was defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “a student monitor in a usually private school” (3). One specifically earmarked to apply as a prefect in the NBPS boys’ dormitory for residential students within the Campus in Coral Springs. I would like to help the dorm parent in responsibilities such as preparing schedules and calling in which room has clean up duties; make sure student residents would be working on homework in prep time; helping reminding 10th graders to go to bed at 10:30 pm or 11th graders to go bed at 11;00 pm and reminding students of their wake-up time at 7:00 am, among others. The reasons why I want to be a prefect are varied but the ultimate objective is to make a few improvements on the quality of service and physical condition of the dorm. As it is now, current student residents have described the living conditions in the dormitory as raunchy and a bit squalid, requiring a touch of immediate application of cleanliness and immaculateness within the premises. One could understand that the condition of the dormitory currently is messy and unorganized justifying the need for a prefect to assist in organization, direction and control to help one’s friends to improve their living condition and the environment, in general. As humans, I strongly believe that there is a consistent need to maintain order in every endeavor, particularly in making our living place clean and uncluttered and pristine. I have been trained early in life to observe cleanliness and to abide by schedules. Equipped with time management skills, personal discipline, and adherence to cleanliness of the space one resides and of one’s external environment, I am a strong advocate for keeping things in proper perspectives. In this regard, I am highly enthusiastic to assume the position as a dorm prefect to assist in putting order, organization, direction and adherence to prescribed schedules, as defined by the dorm policies. With strong leadership skills, I have observed that I am a person who always observes complying deadlines and schedules and I do not allow being late on anything. Being conscious of time management, I would be the most appropriate candidate for the position of a prefect to enable me to remind the student residents of their respective times for studying, waking up, sleeping, and ensuring complying with physical hygiene in order and in defined schedules. In addition, I would like to govern in leading our dorm to be better than the girls’ dorm as I want to show that boys can also be really clean and organized or even surpass the girls’ performance. Furthermore, I want to instill that there is a need to make changes on the behavior and discipline for the boys so that they would prevent being so messy and to start being conscientious on cleanliness, orderliness and maintenance of a pristine environment. I want to be instrumental in changing their behavior in treating their own personal place and of adhering to time management. These are the reasons that why I want to be a prefect. 2. How would your peers (classmate, roommates, etc.) describe you? My peers describe me through the use of the following adjectives: generally always happy, cheerful, helpful, nice, talkative, neat and clean; but with tendencies to be a little annoying due to my talkativeness. When I am really concentrating on doing a particular task or endeavor, I usually try my very best on it; exerting exemplary efforts to achieve the defined objectives. This is precisely the reason why I am a good candidate for the prefect position because through careful planning and self-discipline, in conjunction with time management skills, I am a perfect role model for adhering to schedules and complying with cleanliness, orderliness and the need to achieve whatever goals are defined. I am also described as exhibiting behavior for not only appropriately responding to situations; but also of being proactive – meaning, anticipating the necessary things that need to be done, even without being told. Part of one’s ability to be proactive has been developed through self-discipline and early training on time management and adhering to schedules. I was trained to prepare and organize, prioritize tasks and activities, which include foreseeing potential tasks and responsibilities that could emerge as part of one’s future schedules. In doing so, I have learned to be forward looking which assisted in my planning skills as well as in enabling me to design and develop the most effective schedule that would ensure my achievement of defined goals. 3. What qualities do you have that would make you a good prefect? My being talkative could also be strength and an asset for the prefect role since there is really a need for the prefect to be constantly reminding students of the need to be orderly and to observe cleanliness and following prescribed schedule of activities. A prefect needs to be vocal in communicating the goals and be a constant reminder to the student residents – without being too overbearing. Therefore, be exhibiting a balanced manifestation of my qualities, characteristics and traits, I could use my strengths to perform the expected responsibilities of the prefect; and the noted weaknesses (being talkative) could be transformed as a positive feature with potentials for improving – like communicating the essential things and by not going overboard to include saying things that are not relevant. As noted and observed by my peers, my being proactive is also an exemplary quality, in conjunction with above average leadership skills. These traits would assist in making me a good prefect because these skills assist in complying with functions relating to planning, organizing, directing and controlling the students who reside within the dormitory, and who would be under one’s jurisdiction and governance. Further, my being generally friendly and helpful would be the skills needed for interrelating with people from various backgrounds. This appropriately indicates that as a generally gregarious person, I would be perceived as approachable and I could therefore easily relay the things that need to be placed in proper perspectives. 4. What one change would you like to help make possible next year? I plan to assist in making the whole dorm organized and clean, through instilling in the minds of the student residents the need to adhere to time management and to observe cleanliness, proper hygiene and orderliness throughout one’s lifetime – not only while they are student residents within the dorm. I would to this by constantly reminding them of the benefits of keeping one’s area of responsibility neat and clean, and of observing self-discipline in adhering to schedules through effective time management. The following tabular illustration would highlight the current situation and condition of the dormitory and the change that I would like to implement within the year: AREAS IDENTIFIED CURRENT SITUATION PLANNED CHANGES Lounge smells bad; cluttered maintain in pristine order to eliminate odor and be presentable to residents and guests Kitchen and Refrigerator messy; not organized ensure regular, scheduled cleaning; put order into things Bathroom and lavatory not enough cleaning maintain perfect cleanliness through regular scheduled collaborative cleaning Clothes cluttered on the floor reminders to keep clothes hanged or folded; with dirty clothes placed on laundry hampers and laundered as scheduled Trash scattered everywhere observance of trash disposal according to categories Students’ Rooms messy, cluttered, no order reminder to put everything in proper order; regular and scheduled cleaning One envisions that to be able to assist the students in complying with the planned changes focusing in observing cleanliness and orderliness in the dorm’s various areas and rooms, there is a need to enforce a set of dormitory policies and procedures that include a code of dormitory discipline to be communicated to all the student residents. These set of policies, rules and regulations would include the expected responsibilities of each student residents and a corresponding set of sanctions for violating the rules. This would set the standards for cleanliness and orderliness, as needed. For example, if a student resident has been observed to violate orderliness by cluttering one’s clothes on the floor, instead of being hanged, folded or placed in respective laundry hampers, the student resident should be sanctioned by being given a reprimand (for first offense); warning (for second offense) and imposition of agreed upon penalties (such as cleaning the bathroom or washing a set of laundry), as needed. The code of discipline would assist in instilling controls and in observing that the students’ would adhere to the rules and policies of cleanliness and orderliness. Sanctions must be agreed upon by the members of the dormitory to avoid undue complaints and should be commensurate to the violations noted. If student residents constantly and consistently observe cleanliness and orderliness, they should be appropriately rewarded. For instance, they could have a Friday pizza night or the students who are to be rewarded would be spared from cleaning the bathroom for the week (as agreed upon). One honestly believes that the success of a prefect would actually depend on the ability to seek the collaborative effort of every member of the dormitory in observing cleanliness and orderliness, as needed. One strongly believes that I could be instrumental in making the needed improvements and transformations in the NBPS boys’ dormitory for students within the Campus in Coral Springs.
